What if theatre makers were to pause for one hour a month to reconnect with self and others? The reason: artists give of themselves, but cannot give when empty. The concept: enter a space to heal, restore and energize through yoga.
It would be simple enough to call this “free yoga,” but the aim is far more. Especially now, community care and self-care are acts of resilience. Converge is a nomadic healing arts gathering where individuals engage the mind, body, and consciousness, provided at no cost to host or participant. Once a month, Converge will “pop up” at a different host site in the DMV for theatre makers - performers, designers, directors, production workers, administrators, arts educators - as a community offering. The session is free - just good will as DMV theatre makers take care of one another. This session is hosted by me, Elena Velasco, a 200-hr certified yoga instructor with Red Cross CPR/BLS/AED training.
Folx know me in different capacities - director, choreographer, activist, professor, mother. My identities are intertwined and grounded in my yogic practice and community organizing. We’re all experiencing challenging times. This is how I feel I can do my part to bring some healing into our world.
What to expect:
A one hour yoga session for all levels, blending vinyasa, restorative, and meditative practices.
What to bring:
A yoga mat and water bottle. If you do not have a yoga mat, please note this in your signup under comments or notes. I can provide up to five mats during a session, first to inquire, first to receive.
